APRiL PARiS Design
(The Making Of)

From One Style to the Next

I’ll be the first to admit that I haven’t necessarily found my “style” quite yet.  Originally titled “Golden Locks” – a portrait of London-based songwriter and producer Yeule (Nat Ćmiel). What started as a simple watercolor painting evolved into an exciting project that pushed my creative boundaries.
My best friend Anthony Phothirath came to me expressing his appreciation for the piece and requested that I transform it into a design for his clothing brand APRiL PARiS.
I’ve always had a huge passion for anime since I was young, but have never really explored the style in my own artwork – mostly because of a fear of judgement.  Honestly I believe this is why I appreciate this piece so much – it’s allowed me to not only collaborate with my closest friend, but to openly embrace the parts of me that make me, me.

Several sketches and iterations later, we’ve made stickers, trucker hats, t-shirts, and hoodies using this design.

Want to learn to do this for yourself? Check out my blog post here for a step by step walkthrough to see how we made this piece come to life.
